India Pale Ale

Herewith my first IPA:

IPA Initial Gravity

It’s about 1.039, which is a light initial gravity. Adjusting for temperature might push it a hair over 1.04, but if it doesn’t ferment out close to 1.000, it will be a light one regardless. Adeodatus just brewed this recipe (which is courtesy of Matt Causey at Beer At Home), and speaks favorably of it. I’ll let you know how it bottles.

And speaking of Zymurgy–which we have not in some time–I made a valiant effort in the late spring to brew a recipe Mrs. Berglund would enjoy, even though she does not historically have a taste for beer. I made it as light as I could with available ingredients, added no adjuncts and virtually no hops, and bottled it with a full ten ounces of strawberry-kiwi extract. If ever there was a girl beer, this was it.

Well, not long after I racked it, Kari was diagnosed as being gluten intolerant. This is actually a pretty big deal and a long story in itself, but for our purposes tonight, suffice it to say that the gluten-bearing barley in the Strawberry Kiwi Light Ale kind of killed the deal. I bottled it, let it carbonate, and finally tried one. It was disgusting. Seriously, it’s undrinkable.

The upshot is my sister likes it, so at least it won’t go to waste. I have higher hopes for this IPA.

Just for the record, that sounds disgusting to me, too. I don’t like a really robust beer — a Black and Tan is about the strongest I enjoy. But please, don’t fruit-flavor my beers, and please, PLEASE, if you’re having a light, don’t ask me if I want a beer, lest you confuse me. I’ll take a nice, normal lager, thank you. (I don’t have much experience with the more exotic varieties of ales, so I couldn’t tell ya about that.)

Oh, and while I’m here, I couldn’t stop by without whining about something, right? Well, anyhow, there’s no way to navigate from post to post right now. Fortunately I can (heavy sigh) just go to my RSS-enabled bookmarks and click on each link, but it’s not supposed to be that way, is it?

You mean the next/previous links at the top of the single-post page? Yes, those are gone for a season. Seems they were causing trouble in IE. I plan to restore them in a cross-browser-friendly fashion soon.

And hey, I did a raspberry honey wheat last year that was downright respectable. Although I must say I need to hurry up and do a stout–it’s been far too long.

A classic, Tim! Just classic! I love this post. I can barely contain my laughter, except that the much pregnant wife is sleeping upstairs. So, I must contain. Sad to hear about the gluten intolerance. That is a shame. Oh well! On with better beers!

Sorry, just had to put in a two-pence of thought here to show that I am alive and reading the blog. See ya Monday.
