The Gipper Passes
Surely not news to you as you read this, and I will not compose any lengthy euology for him, but it cannot go un-noted. My son recognizes the name as that of the greatest president of his Dad’s lifetime. I will leave it at that.

My parents carted us all the way out to the Dayton airport to catch a glimpse of Ronnie on the campaign trail (the first time). Even though I was in fifth grade, my dad still hoisted me up on his shoulders so I could see the man who would orchestrate the downfall of the Evil Empire, and make my generation wonder whatever was the big deal about nuclear weapons. We mustn’t forget Iran-Contra and other less savory anti-communist crusades, but the man went out a respected leader. (And I did vote for him that first time. Sure it was a mock 5th grade election, but still)

I was a mere child when he was shot, but have very vivid memories of fear. (How could someone shoot THE PRESIDENT?) Ah, innocence.
In any event, he was a very sick man for a very long time, and he is finally at peace. You can’t ask for much more than to die surrounded by loved ones and be mourned by millions of people–even a few non-Republicans.
Blessed Be Ronnie.
